Earlier in July 2x World Champion Tyler Wright regretfully withdrew from the Corona JBay Open due to contracting Influenza A while travelling to the event in South Africa. The illness sent her to hospital, then from hospital to bed rest in Jeffrey’s Bay where she stayed for a week recovering.
Tyler returned home to Australia shortly after the Corona JBay Open wrapped up and has since been recovering. Due to the severity of the sickness, doctors have advised that she is not fit to travel to America and surf in the US Open of Surfing.
The illness has affected Tyler by fatiguing her and causing 8kgs of weight loss – a symptom that has hugely draining affects on the body. To surf at an elite level the body and mind has to be in peak condition, and Tyler has not recovered enough to be at a place where it’s healthy to put her body through the physical stress of international travel, training and competition.
“Unfortunately I will be withdrawing from the Vans US Open of Surfing,” said Tyler.
“I’m back in Australia and still recovering from Influenza A. I’m getting better, but still a long way from full strength. Thanks to everyone for the continued support.”
Rip Curl and the World Surf League offer full support for Tyler during her recovery process and look forward to seeing her back in the water.
