Don’t Call It a “Lay Day”

Josh Kerr, Jacob Willcox, Gearoid McDaid and Jack Robinson keep the adrenaline high at a nearby slab while waiting for a HUGE Finals Day swell heading to Padang for Thursday.

A “Lay Day” at most surf contests traditionally means small, junky surf, being a tourist in town, and occasionally a late night at the pub in an attempt to petition the surf gods to send some waves. In other words, lots of leisure and little action. Lay Day at The Rip Curl Cup, however, is a whole different story.

After Sunday’s fireworks at Padang for the opening rounds of competition, the barrels at Padang early Monday morning weren’t stellar enough to get the green light to run the semis and finals. So Josh Kerr, Jacob Willcox, Gearoid McDaid and Jack Robinson decided to keep the adrenaline high at a nearby slab while waiting for the huge Finals Day swell heading to Padang for Thursday.

If crazy barrels like these are going down on a “Lay Day,” imagine what’s about to go down at Padang on Thursday when the biggest swell to hit Indonesia in 5+ years arrives just in time for the Finals of The Rip Curl Cup.

Following are the upcoming

Semifinal 1
Jacob Willcox (AUS)

Agus “Blacky” Setiawan (IND)
Made Adi Putra (IND)

Semifinal 2
Jack Robinson (AUS)
